Yup both arent good, Like you said Jietian sect pretty much do as they want, and not follow the Laws of the Universe, to sever from the Laws of the Universe, while Butian sect is follow the Laws of the Universe but according to their interpretation of the Laws of the Universe. Which leads to their arrogance in believing everyone else is wrong and they are always right. One prescribes chaos the other prescribes order.

Both sects are always at odds against each other, if I had to choose it would be Jietian sect, since you can do as you wish, freedom of choice is what Shi Hao always go by lol but he doesnt join any since he likes to do as he wishes without the constraints and restrictions of any rules of a sect

In any case both sects were not very relevant since the Clans and Academies were more influential and stronger than their sects in the later part of the novel, personally I believe the author forgot about them as he started to write about the sects and clans lol

The author actually wanted to show how small these Sects and minor clans truly are when he wrote the stronger Clans and Academies. But in the end, the power scaling went too far and they became irrelevant when he wanted to go back to them.

The Sects and smaller clans in higher realms behavior is akin to: A bunch of 'city people' who's competed internationally but lost to their rivals at equal playing fields too badly, they gave up and came to a small town to bully the local hobbyists, turns out they ran into the future world champion (Shi Hao) who is still a welp. Still, future world champion's abilities are nothing to scoff at and gave them a bruised eye and a bloodied nose.

effect which is why it sometimes help and most of the time doesnt, in exchange for other artifacts or items to absorb in order to replenish itself, it isnt a bad thing just very unpredictable and hungry for artifacts to absorb
